Suspension shims for shock absorbers and front forks

Suspension shims are thin, precision-made metal discs used in shock absorbers and front forks. They are part of a shim stack: a stack of shims that controls the oil flow inside the damper. When the suspension moves, pressure builds up in the oil. The shims flex in a controlled way and determine how much resistance the oil experiences. As a result, shims directly influence damping behaviour, vehicle control and suspension performance.

Why material and dimensions matter

Although a shim may look like a simple component, dimensions, material quality and flatness are very important in suspension applications. The inner diameter must fit correctly onto the relevant part of the damper, the outer diameter influences how the shim works within the stack, and the thickness has a major effect on stiffness and flex behaviour. Small differences in dimensions can therefore have a noticeable effect on how a shim stack performs.

ShockShim shims are made from Sandvik 7C27Mo2, a hardened stainless spring steel suitable for dynamically loaded applications. This material combines elasticity, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. For shock absorbers and front forks, this is important because shims need to flex repeatedly and return reliably to their original shape. Consistent material quality helps keep the performance of the shim stack repeatable.

Custom shims with our own laser cutting machine

In addition to standard shims, ShockShim also produces custom suspension shims. If the size you need is not available in the webshop, we can manufacture shims using our own automated laser cutting machine. This allows us to produce custom combinations of inner diameter, outer diameter and thickness without the need for a dedicated stamping tool. Special shapes, prototypes and test series are also possible.

Laser-cut shims offer additional flexibility for professional suspension applications. Because the design can be adjusted digitally, custom sizes and variants can be produced more efficiently. Laser cutting also applies less mechanical pressure to the material than traditional stamping, which can contribute to improved shim flatness.
